Darwin December and January School holidays 2021 break is fast approaching! We will have six weeks break for Darwin public schools.  Starting Friday 17th December (Private and Independent school holidays may be slightly different – please check with your school).  Students will return to school on 31st January 2022!

Yes parent SIX WEEKS to keep the kids busy and entertained without loosing your sanity! Darwin Family Life has rounded up some of the fantastic options that are free (or affordable) activities to do with your kids these Darwin December and January School holidays 2021- 22.

Casuarina Pool – All ages Pool Party – Friday 14th

Free family fun day for everyone to enjoy at Casuarina Pool. Free entry from 3pm with a free BBQ. Entertainment will include Messy Bubs (sensory fun for the little ones), Corrugated Iron circus activities and and temporary tattoos, karaoke and E-Sports and pool inflatable.

A FREE youth pool party will follow for ages 10-17 from 6pm to 9pm. These are drug and alcohol free events.

LEGO Robotics Workshop – Saturday 15th January

Inspired NT and the CDU Women in STEM Ambassador Team bring you a LEGO robotics workshop aimed to inspire young minds. The physical-meets-digital world with these interactive, remote-control robots and intelligent vehicles. LEGO Mindstorms consists of 5 unique motorized robotics designs to build, plus fun drag-and-drop coding and challenging activities to complete with the Robot Inventor App. For students Year 5 and above. Top End Multi Sports

TEMS have their popular sports holiday program back in January. For the best holiday fun, book your kids into our Holiday Program where they have a variety of sports and activities to keep your kids entertained!

Program consists of: Soccer, tennis, volleyball, pool time and more. Daily activities have flexibility to suit children.

Casuarina Square – Wonderful Woodland

Head to Casuarina Square these school holidays for an exciting 2+ weeks of free activities for kids. Brought to you by Tip Top Circus Entertainment and Magical Moments Petting Zoo Darwin.

From Friday 14th January to Sunday 30th January 2022, 11am – 1pm at Resort node (located behind The Coffee Club) There will be petting zoo, crafts, face painting/balloons and a fairy floss machine!

Surf Life Saving NT – Free activities at the Waterparks

They have got you covered this coming January Holidays at Leanyer Recreation park and Palmerston Water Park with a range of free activities to get involved in. Amongst all the fun, SLSNT will be offering special swim lessons for the first time at Leanyer Recreation Park, pedal powered bike blender sessions, skateboarding at Palmerston Water Park, inflatable Friday’s, Surf & Sail, BBQs with Anglicare NT and more! Darwin Waterfront – Waterworld

January and February is Dalay (monsoon) season and to celebrate we have a week of free fun water and croc themed activities for the January school holidays. Free activities from Monday 17th to Friday 21st – head here for more information

Go Nights! Friday Nights

Girls only drop in space – from 4pm to 8pm on Friday 14th, 21st and 28th. Free workshops, dinner and bus home. Free entry for females only ages 10-17 at Casuarina square (next to Edge health club in the Quarter.)

Youth Space Casuarina – Wednesdays and Fridays

FREE youth space with activities movies, music, art, e-games, film making, food and more. For youth aged 10-17 from 1pm to 6pm on Wednesdays and Fridays during the school holidays. Located next to Edge health club in the Quarter at Casuarina Square.

The Shak – various dates

Youth activities and food will be provided. For kids aged 10-17, held at Sanderson Middle school from 12 to 6pm. Larrakia can drop off  home after 5pm. Runs from Monday 3rd January, every day of the week (except Sundays). Free event and no registrations required.

Youth Trax Community BBQ and Games – 11th, 12th, 25th and 28th January

Free community barbecue and games for kids aged 10-17yrs at Leanyer Waterpark. Food will be provided. No registration required.

Community Fun Day – Friday 21st January

Clubhouse Territory’s community fun day, all-abilities come and try is on again and for the first time we are holding it in Palmerston! Don’t miss out on an all-inclusive free family day! Register for their event today here

City of Darwin Libraries

January 22nd – GEEKTACULAR is back on! Gaming from esports to board games, fun snacks for sale, meetups to discuss topics and interests, stalls with stuff for sale such as prints, handmade goods, cosplay opportunities, dungeons and dragons and more! The event will be hosted at Casuarina Library and entry will be free. Geektacular will be held from 2pm to 6pm at Casuarina Library (17 Bradshaw Tce) on Saturday 22nd January.

Nightcliff Pool Party – Sunday 23rd January

YMCA are hosting a free family fun pool party, music and lots of fun. From 3pm to 6pm. Food will be provided. No registrations required.

Swim Dynamics – School holiday swim lesson intensives

Give your child’s swimming and water confidence a boost this January 2020 school holidays by participating in Swim Dynamics School holiday intensive program. They will build water confidence, skill development and keep the kids active & busy! Let’s face it, there’s no better place to be than in the water in this weather!

January program dates:

week 1 dates 10th to 14th
week 2 dates 17th to 21st
week 3 dates 24th to 28th

Leanyer Recreation Park

Another great option to keep the kids busy and cool these Darwin December and January 2020 school holidays is to visit Leanyer Recreation park. It is a FREE water recreation park located at 215 Vanderlin Drive Leanyer. The Park consists of dry and wet recreational areas. Please NOTE the Dry playground is currently closed due to upgrades. The wet area includes a swimming lagoon (shallow in many areas – great for toddlers and young children), three massive water slides for the older kids and a wet playground that is great for all ages. There are large grassed areas for play, BBQ’s, a dry playground, skate park and basketball courts. The Park has lots of shaded areas including over the pool, the wet play area, the skate park and the grassed areas. There are toilets and change room facilities. 

Opening hours during the school holidays are:
9am to 8pm – grassed area and BBQ’s
10am to 6pm – wet play area
11am to 6pm – water slides

Palmerston Water Park

Palmerston Water Park is the second water park in Darwin. It also FREE and open seven days a week. Located at Cnr University Ave and Roystonea Ave (access via Roystonea Ave). The water park includes a 14 metre high – 100 metre long – six-line racer water slide, a wet play area for families and toddlers featuring sprays, water curtains and a shallow wading pool. Another wet play area for teenagers featuring more active water cannons, buckets and high intensity interactive play, a café, toilets and change room facilities, open grassed play area with BBQs, shaded areas and a skate park.
Opening hours during the school holidays are:
9am to 6pm – grassed area and BBQ’s
10am to 6pm – wet play area
11am to 6pm – water slide

Playshack Palmerston

Why not head into the Playshack located in the Hub complex Palmerston (Shop 7, 3 Maluka Drive). Let the kids run and burn their energy and you can enjoy a coffee or drink and a slice of Petra’s Raw cakes available for purchase. The Playshack have extended during school holidays. Their hours will be 8.30 am till 2 pm Monday – Friday (during the Xmas period or till 4pm otherwise), plus the usual weekend times of Saturday 9 am till 5 pm and Sunday 10 am till 4 pm. Entry is only $9.90 per child during the week and bubs under 1 are free. Please remember your socks! Closed Public holidays.

Darwin Ice Skating Centre – special offers!

Our friends at Darwin Ice Skating Centre have some great special offers always on for families! You can skate 1 Parent & 1 Child (5yrs and under) for just $24. Or a family pass of  2 Adults & 2 Children (between 6 Years & 14 Years) is $60.00.

If you buy a pre-paid pass for 10 sessions and receive a 20% discount off the total price. They also have loyalty cards where after 10 skating sessions, you’ll be able to skate for free on the 11th visit.

Museum and Art Gallery Northern Territory (MAGNT)

The Museum and Art Gallery NT (located at 19 Conacher St) is another great place to take the kids and keep them entertained for a few hours in air conditioning! My kids love visiting the turtles next to the main entrance and there is always interesting new exhibitions and the same old favourites.  Entry to the MAGNT is free and they are open Tuesday to Saturday 10am till 4pm and Sundays open 10am till 5pm.

Santa’s Village – Smith Street Mall from Saturday 4th December

Santa’s Village will be happening again in the Mall thanks to City of Darwin from Saturday 4th December till Thursday 23rd December. You will find Santa in the West lane arcade in the mall between 9:30-11am and 11:30-1pm Weekdays and Saturday where you can take your own photo with the Santa and your kids.

There will be many festive activities for the kids to participate in with Fun in the parks team also set up between 9.30am to 1pm daily from the 4th of December (except Sundays.)

Catch the Christmas Train at Casuarina Square!

Say choo choo choo. Step aboard the Magical Christmas train and be transported to a holiday wonderland.  Running from now till December 14 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday only), from December 17 to December 24, the train will be running daily.

Aqua Park at Darwin Waterfront Lagoon!

If you’re looking for a fun and challenging activity for the family, Aqua Park is the place for you! A great day out for the young (and the young at heart). The configuration of the park allows non-stop paths of entertainment and will always lead you in the right direction to run, jump and slide. Crocosaurus Cove – Junior Reptile Rangers Program

If you are also looking for something for your kids during the School holidays, check out the fantastic Junior Reptile Ranger program at Crocosaurus Cove! 

The Junior Reptile Ranger program is a fun behind-the-scenes tour designed specifically for kids between the ages of 7 and 12. This 2 hour program, led by our experienced reptile handlers, gives children the opportunity to meet, feed, and learn about the Top End’s most unique reptiles. Also included is a souvenir lanyard and colour photo with our baby croc! This is a fantastic program for kids who love animals and have a desire to learn more about the NT’s unique wildlife. Palmerston Christmas Wonderland from 17th December

City of Palmerston will sparkle again this year with the return of Christmas Wonderland to Goyder Square! Grab your family and friends, don a tinsel scarf and reindeer ears, and head down to Goyder Square for a night of magical fun. Kids and adults alike can enjoy a Christmas feast of activities, and ride on Santa’s train past the spectacular Christmas tree. Plus so much more! Youth Drop In Sports –  various dates

Palmerston and Regional Basketball Association (PaRBA)  will be hosting activities include Christmas craft, pass the parcel, basketball, snacks, music and fun aimed at 10-17 yr olds at the Palmerston Recreation Centre. More information here

Palmerston YMCA activities – various dates

YMCA will be hosting a varity of activities through the December and January Holidays at the Yspace Up Top, aimed at 10-17 yr olds. More information here

Join in the Christmas themed Lego club at Casuarina Library from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and the Santa’s STEAM workshop at Darwin City Library at 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Christmas Movie – Saturday 18th December

A Christmas themed movie will be showing at Karama Library at 9.30am.
