Buley Rockhole in Litchfield National Park - is one of our family favourites to visit for a day trip!
Buley Rockholes is perfect for families as there is multiple rock pools and many spots for families to enjoy - plus I find this spot easier with multiple kids rather than some of the deeper bigger waterfalls in Litchfield. Kids can jump in and swim back a short distance or across the rockpool. The very short easy walk from the carpark to the rock pool (less than 5mins) is also a huge plus for families and those with little legs or ones needing to be carried.
Buley Rockhole has a variety of pools which range from deep plunge pools to shallower sections. There are several cascading small waterfalls in between the rockpools.
Buley can flow heavily in the wet season - and at times can have strong currents. I have seen a few times where kids have nearly gone over a little waterfall - always recommend swimming within arm's reach of little ones. Always check if it is open via the NT Gov website here, as conditions in the wet can change quickly.
Keep watch of dark green or black areas on the rocks when accessing the rock pools as these can be very slippery. There are no accessibility ramps into Buley.
We are very blessed to have this amazing piece of nature - right in our backyard - only about 1hr 40mins from Darwin. If you are coming from Darwin - it is quickest to go via Bachelor. Buley Rockhole is also right next to Florence Falls if you also wanted to make a stop there too. However there is many steps to get down into Florence to navigate.
Pack a picnic or some snacks to make the day trip complete and you will hopefully have some tired kids sleeping on the drive home!
Buley Rockholes is approx (135km) - 1hr and 40mins from Darwin (via Bachelor).
You can also go via Berry Springs however this way is slightly longer.
Located in Litchfield National Park - off Litchfield Park Road (next to Florence Falls).
