Libraries

There are four public libraries in City of Darwin area, these are located at Darwin City (Civic Centre, Harry Chan Avenue), Casuarina (17 Bradshaw Terrace) Karama (Karama Shops, Kalymnous drive) and Nightcliff (10-12 Pavonia Place)

There is more to our Libraries than what’s on the shelves. Darwin Libraries are community spaces that can be used by members and non-members for learning and leisure. Come and explore our programs, services and spaces and see how you can enjoy these vibrant community assets.

Baby Book Time

For babies ages 3 to 12 months and their grownups. These sessions are suitable for the age ranges specified. If you have older children also, please consider one of our other programs for your family.

It’s never too early to start reading to your baby. Baby Book Time will reacquaint parents with nursery rhymes and early childhood songs as well as showcase great books for babies.

Rhyme Time

For ages 3 to 24 months and their grownups. These sessions are suitable for the age ranges specified. If you have older children also, please consider one of our other programs for your family.

Clap and move to our Rhyme Time sessions. We’ll explore rhymes, songs and finger play. Interact with your baby to nurture the pre-literacy, language and social skills.

The Rhyme Time program will run all year.

Toddler Time

For ages 1 to 3 years and their grownups. These sessions are suitable for the age ranges specified. If you have older children also, please consider one of our other programs for your family.

Dance, sing and read along with your child at our action packed Toddler Time program. Sessions include simple songs, short stories and movement activities.

Preschool Story Time

For ages 3 to 5 years and their grownups. Younger siblings are welcome, but may need more assistance from their grownups to engage with the stories and activities aimed at older children.

Build early literacy skills in children with a wide selection of picture books and stories in our fun, interactive storytelling sessions. Story Times help to develop listening, reading and comprehension skills in readiness for school.

Family Story Time

Our weekend Story Time includes songs, rhymes and stories which celebrate reading, books and using the library with your family.
All ages are welcome to attend. No tickets are needed for this event.

Steam Zone at the libraries!

STEAM Zone encourages people of all ages enjoy STEAM based activities at the Libraries. Each STEAM Zone has a different theme, activities, and resources so there’s always something new to discover. No bookings required. All ages are welcome.

When: 3-4.30pm Every second Wednesday

Fun Bus

The Fun Bus mobile playgroup, welcomes everyone with children from 0 to 5 years old to come along and join us to play, laugh, sing and have fun.

Fun Bus playgroups are a FREE, fun and informal space where parents, carers, babies and children aged 0 to 5 years can come together in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Over 30 years, more than 30,000 families have joined us. It started as an NTG initiative in Bagot Community and in time Fun Bus extended its reach with 5 locations.

Locations and Times

Fun Bus operates weekdays between 9.30am and 11.30am at different locations throughout the municipality of Darwin.

Bring along hats, appropriate clothing and a piece of fruit per family for morning tea.

Outdoor Dry Season

Monday - Bagot Community - Bagot Road, Ludmilla

Tuesday - Wanguri Park - Wanguri Terrace, Wanguri

Wednesday - Jingli Water gardens - Freshwater Road, Jingli

Thursday - Yanyula Park - Yanyula Drive Anula (behind Anula Shops)

Friday - Civic Park - Smith Street, Darwin City

Note: If we are experiencing heavy rain, the Fun Bus program will be cancelled for the day. To confirm if the Fun Bus is operating, please contact 0419 031 651 or go to our Facebook page.

Fun in the Parks

Fun in the Parks is a funded school holiday program focused on the primary school age group and held at various ovals and parks around Darwin, so children can participate at a venue local to where they live.

Operating Hours

The program operates from 10.00am to 12.30pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during school holidays, except public holidays.

So, slip on some shoes and cool clothing for outdoor fun, slop on some sunscreen (provided) and slap on a hat and come along to have some fun and meet new friends.

Community Programs

The City of Darwin has many programs that support community and Council collaboration in areas including safety, health, arts and culture, children's services and international relations. They also provide grants and sponsorship to community initiatives which directly benefit and promote the City of Darwin.
